Remember back in January when we were all like, “Yeah! Slay 2017! This is the year…yeah! *high fivezzzzz*” Remember that?! Didn’t think so. I wanted to take a minute, mid-year, to regroup and give you some tricks that you can use TODAY, and on a daily basis, to get you back on track for crushing the heck out of your year. Okay?
1) START BY WRITING DOWN YOUR THREE MOST IMPORTANT TASKS
Forget about everything else for a second, and start your morning by thinking about the three most important things that you have on your to-do list. Write them down. It is incredible how effective this super simple task is. This is also important: make sure that your big three are reasonably achievable in a day’s work, okay? Don’t be too easy on yourself, but also, don’t expect to complete a year’s worth of bookkeeping in an afternoon either. Once you have your three big to-do’s listed, rank each of those, work on them in order of priority and STAY FOCUSED. Reward yourself at the end of this by doing the fun stuff, whatever that might be for you.
2) PARK YOUR EMAIL INBOX AND SOCIAL MEDIA
Don’t even open your email, Facebook or Instagram until your big three tasks are completed or else you will get pulled into a time sucking vortex of non-productivity. This includes no DMing or texting unless it needs to be dealt with right now. Shut all of those distractions off, they can wait until you’re finished. Think of them as a reward.
C’mon, admit it, you know that answering one simple email can turn into a rabbit hole of residual tasks, and one quick refresh of the Facebook feed can suck away an hour!
3) APPROXIMATE YOUR TIME AND TAKE BREAKS
Take note of approximately how long each thing will take, and do regular check-ins with your clock. This will help you to set reasonably achievable goals, but also, will help keep you on track with your day. Now, my inner Occupational Therapist wants to come out and say something: make sure you take very short, but regular breaks. Put these on the timer as well so that you don’t get tempted or distracted by something else during break time. Five minutes can be enough time to have a stretch, a quick walk and grab a glass of water or use the washroom.
So there you have it: three wicked simple tactics to help transform you from a daydreamer into a getter dunner. If it can work for me, it can work for anyone, and by forming these types of habits, you will be amazed by what you can accomplish on a daily, yearly, LIFETIME basis. It’s time for you to start ninja-ing that mundane to-do list and start crushing everything in life. Right?! Now let’s get to work, boss!!
