beginner photography

BY KELLY LAWSON

Dust off that fancy camera of yours and take this quick 8-module online course for getting you out of auto mode and on the road to creating stunning images for your social media, for your business, of your kids, pets, vacations or simply for yourself!

You spent all that money to buy a big fancy camera because you thought as soon as you had it, and took a couple of snaps, you photos would be totally profesh, right? And then they weren't?

Thought so.... (hey, it happens to the best of us!)

SAY NO MORE, TEACH ME TO USE THIS THING ALREADY!

aRE YOU READY?

can you imagine...

Confidently knowing what camera settings to use inside and outside and everywhere in-between.

Finally taking the stunning photos that you imagined you could when you bought your fancy camera.

What mode settings are for which scenarios and knowing which one to choose, and how to create those beautiful images with the blurred out backgrounds.

Knowing what lens to buy next, and knowing which lenses are best for what types of photos.

Proudly displaying the photos YOU took on your walls in albums and on social media.

... then keep scrolling, friend!

guess what? I think I know you...

BUT WHAT IF YOU COULD LEARN ON YOUR OWN TERMS, AT YOUR OWN PACE?

photography is something that you've been wanting to learn but you just can't seem to find the time?

Does your fancy camera feel like something you *should* be using, but try as you might, you can't seem to wrap your head around what all of the dials and buttons are for?

This is where I come in....

You love the thought of throwing that camera in your bag before you head out on a day trip, but you aren't sure how it works, and you know that you'll end up just using your phone anyway, so you don't bother.

You know you have a good eye for photography, and that you are serving your precious moments an injustice by documenting them on your iPhone. But hey, you'll take better photos someday.

So you pour another glass of fermented grapes/cup of coffee, and you continue to daydream about your life in beautiful photographs, that will be taken by you, with that fancy cam...

...and today you're ready to start taking photos that you can be proud of.

thIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF...

You have a camera sitting on a shelf somewhere that you are too intimidated to use.

You're thinking about buying a new camera, but you're certain once you unbox it you'll have no idea where to begin.

You're FINALLY ready to let your iPhone take a backseat to the creation of stunning photos, instead of the other way around.

let's fix that!

Let's kickoff the course by understanding which scenario describes YOU. Did you just buy your first DSLR camera? Are you looking to begin a photography business? Do you simply want to take better photos of your loved ones or special occasions?

In this module I provide an overview of who this course is suited for and what you are about to learn: your DSLR camera settings, the exposure triangle, what manual settings to use and when, the mode dial and we will finish by taking you on a real-life shoot with a sweet couple, both indoors and outdoors.

LESSON one: introduction

In this module I talk about what you will need to have in your camera bag to get started (HINT: it is basically any camera that will allow you to shoot in "M" or manual mode), a charged battery, compact flash or SD card, as well as your camera's user manual, as every camera is just a bit different and having this on hand will be helpful.

In this module I talk about what is in my camera bag and give you the opportunity to download the course workbook so that you can follow along freely.

LESSON TWO: SUPPLIES

lesson three

When you look at your camera, you are going to see that there are so many buttons, settings and options, and I break those down for you in this lesson so that you fully understand how to change each of the settings and how that will impact the look of your photos.

In this lesson, we discuss the exposure triangle. A lot of people get hung up on what this exposure triangle is because it tends to seem like a very technical aspect of photography. I explain it to you in a way that is super easy to understand. We go through each individual aspect of the triangle, and how each of these aspects will affect the photo that you are going to take.

LESSON THREE:
THE EXPOSURE TRIANGLE

lesson four

When I first bought my DSLR camera, I shot it only using the auto settings. I was intimidated by all the buttons. I see so many people spending a small fortune on fancy DSLR cameras, with the intention of taking beautiful photos, but they neglect to realize that it is the USER not the DEVICE that makes photos great. In this lesson we talk about why using the manual settings of your camera matters and how it can totally transform the way you make photographs.

In lesson four we cover camera settings on your mode dial: what each of them means, how to use them, and when it is appropriate to use each one.

LESSON FOUR:
auto vs. manual settings

lesson fIVE

Now that we know the different modes on your camera and the impact of the components of the exposure triangle, we are going to talk about how to use these components all together to give you the types of images that you want to produce.

The more you use your camera’s manual mode, and the more you get comfortable understanding the impact of changing any of the three settings of the exposure triangle, the more quickly this will become second nature to you. Before you know it, you will change particular settings to make an image look a certain way without even realizing that you are doing it!

LESSON Five:
adjusting camera settings

lesson SIX

In this lesson we discuss a variety of lens choices, and how each one will help you to achieve your desired image results.

I talk about what is in my camera bag. I personally use mostly prime lenses, which means the lenses have a fixed focal length, which means that they don’t zoom in and out. Instead, as the photographer, I need to do my zooming in and out my feet!

I finish off by recommending what lens should be the next one on your shopping list.

LESSON SIX: LENS CHOICE

lesson Seven

In this lesson we are going to apply our newly acquired knowledge while you shadow me in a real-life shoot where I will take you along on a photoshoot of a sweet couple, both indoors and outdoors.

I explain my shooting process, share with you my camera settings, and give you posing tips and tricks in each setting.

You will see the images I took during the shoot and this lesson brings all of your knowledge together in one simple demo!

LESSON SEVEN:
SHADOW A REAL LIFE SHOOT

lesson EIGHT

By now the images you produce should be taking shape in manual mode now that attendees are armed with the ability to transition from auto to manual.

A reminder to take the time to find your settings, and unless your lighting is changing dramatically due to moving clouds or changing from shade to sun, you should be good to leave them the same.

In this sendoff module I encourage course attendees to post work for feedback.
