this is where i come skipping in...
Let's kickoff the course by understanding which scenario describes YOU. Did you just buy your first DSLR camera? Are you looking to begin a photography business? Do you simply want to take better photos of your loved ones or special occasions? Maybe you are starting an online business as an influencer or educator?
In this lesson, I provide an overview of who this course is suited for and what you are about to learn.
In this lesson, I talk about what you will need to have in your camera bag to get started. (SPOILER ALERT: It's basically any camera that will allow you to shoot in "M" or manual mode, a charged battery, compact flash or SD card, as well as your camera's user manual—as every camera is just a bit different and having this on hand will be helpful!) I'll let you look in my camera bag, and you'll even be able to download the course workbook so that you can follow along freely.
In this lesson, we discuss the exposure triangle. If you're one of those people who get hung up on what an 'exposure triangle (I know, it's technical and technical can be intimidating)—but don't worry! I explain the exposure triangle in a way that is super easy to understand. This includes breaking down all those pesky buttons and dials so you fully understand how to change each setting and how that will impact the look of your photos!
In this lesson, we talk about why using the manual settings of your camera matters. When I first bought my DSLR camera, I shot it only using the auto settings. True story!
I was intimidated by all the buttons. I see so many people spending a small fortune on fancy DSLR cameras, with the intention of taking beautiful photos, but they neglect to realize that it is the USER not the DEVICE that makes photos great.
Now that we know the different modes on your camera and the impact of the components of the exposure triangle, in this lesson, we talk about how to use these components all together to give you the types of images you desire.
The more you use your camera’s manual mode, the more quickly this will become second nature to you. Before you know it, you will be on auto pilot!
In this lesson, we discuss a variety of lens choices and how each one will help you to achieve your desired image results. I talk about what lenses are in my camera bag. (HINT: I personally use mostly prime lenses, which means the lenses have a fixed focal length. They don’t zoom in and out. That means, as the photographer, I need to do my zooming in and out by moving my feet!) You'll end this lesson knowing which lens should be the next one on your shopping list.
In this lesson, I you get to be a fly on the way at one of my photoshoots with a sweet couple—indoors and outdoors!
You get to apply your newly acquired knowledge while you shadow me. I'll explain my shooting process, share with you my camera settings, and even give you posing tips and tricks in each setting. You will see the images I took during the shoot. This lesson is a fan favorite as it brings all of your knowledge together!
Now that you are armed with the ability to transition from auto to manual, the images you produce should start to be taking shape.
Take the time to find your settings. Remember! Unless your lighting is changing dramatically (due to moving clouds or changing from shade to sun) you won't have to change them. In this sendoff, I encourage course attendees to post work for feedback to help you grow!
