Master your fancy camera: Getting started with your DSLR

It was supposed to be a gift to myself. A splurge as I moved from broke-ass student life to the luxuries of adulting. I bought my first DSLR camera on eBay for $600. A week’s pay in those days.

I was so FRIGGIN’ excited! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I popped in the battery and memory card, put the lens on, and eagerly snapped a few pics.  Um, they were crap. Dark. Flat. Totally Unremarkable. My smartphone snaps were just as good. Maybe better.

I was SO confused. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My new camera is FANCY! Shouldn’t my photos look like magazine covers now?!⠀⠀⠀

How to use your dslr camera

So I did what any chickenshit would do… I put the camera away.

It sat on a dark shelf, out of sight, out of reach. Out of mind.  Two years in the literal and proverbial closet. The box I was so excited to open quickly became a lonely product of buyer’s remorse.

One day, I took it down. This time with more determination.

I played. I experimented. I explored the menus and tried out settings. I asked friends to model. I set up practice shoots. I surfed the web for resources.

I cringe to think of some of those early shots.

But then, guess what?

I got a shot I liked. Screw that, I’m just gonna say it: one I loved. A portrait of a friend’s daughter. My picture of this little girl honoured her adorable baby beauty. Here it is, straight out of the camera [sooc] dated on Facebook May 17th, 2010:

Pure gold, right?
